The Art Gallery was founded in 1969 as part of the larger, established furnishing business. It opened with a one man exhibition of Colin Middleton and quickly became a main player on the art scene. Look at any history of late 20th century Irish art and the bulk of the main artists have shown in the Tom Caldwell gallery: Gerard Dillon, Tom Carr, Dan O'Neill, Nevill Johnson, Patrick Collins, Basil Blackshaw, Neil Shawcross and the list goes on. In 1974 the gallery opened in Dublin and for many years was the only art gallery with exhibition space on both sides of the Irish border. With a new gallery space opening in Belfast on the same site as the old furnishing business in the early 1990s it became increasingly difficult to maintain the Dublin gallery and it was eventually closed after twenty years. 2004 sees a radical change with the gallery moving to a new premises after nearly sixty years in Bradbury Place. The new space at 429 Lisburn Road, Belfast will be open to the public from 28th April, 2004.
We are currently building up the library of artists and paintings on the web site so it is currently not complete. Do keep dropping in to see the site as it is continually up-dated.

Having studied at the Royal College in the 70s, Leo Duff had two very successful shows with the Tom Caldwell Gallery. Her current show, opened on 23 April, is a collection of images and experiences inspired by her travels in the far east; Taiwan and South Korea. They knit in superbly with her background in Ireland where stone works are an important part of the island's history and spiritualism.
